According to studies Potato is the third most important food crop in the world after rice and wheat, and has been consumed in one form or another for decades by the people Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa as part of their diet. In recent times, this starchy tuberous crop has not become a staple in Nigeria as has other tuberous crops like yam and cassava. Of all the tuberous crops available for consumption in Nigeria,Potatoes are less starchy, contain more vitamins(C and B complex) ,less saturated fatty acids e.t.c in other words they are more nutritious than the other food crops in this category. Potatoes have over 1400 known varieties, each of which has particular agricultural or culinary attributes. The cultivation of potato in Nigeria, has been limited to the middle belt in states like Jos, kaduna, Taraba to name a few because of the favourable weather conditions were soil temperature are usually below 27 degrees centigrade(81 degrees Fahrenheit) ;Hence potato are considered a cool-season crop.

Dangi foods Ltd embarked on an extensive research over a five(5)year period with emphasis on market research, consumer research, opinion research and survey research. Our approach was to apply these principles from a global perspective. The research was conducted from 4 primary viewpoints ; The growers(farmers), the suppliers, the retailers and the final consumers.

The company recognized that several factors in this chain has led decline in potato consumption in Nigeria in particular. The factors highlighted were Regional costs, preparation time, storage problems, competition from rice and yam as major carbohydrate sources amongst others. The time was right, therefore for potatoes to be reassessed and its position as a nutritious and versatile crop to be re-established.

With this information in hand,Dangi foods Ltd set about to restore this nutritious, tasty but often maligned staple food as a viable alternative in our daily diet, by harnessing our natural resource(potato) and its derivatives to create an assorted range of products from this food source.
